If a sleep study is necessary, you will be scheduled for your sleep study before you leave your consultation visit.
What type of sleep study will be conducted?
Your sleep specialist may conduct a home sleep study or an overnight attended sleep study known as nocturnal polysomnograms or PSG.
There are three types of overnight sleep studies, and they include:➡️
One of the more common overnight sleep studies include the Diagnostic Evaluation Sleep Study. In this study sleep specialists measure your sleep without any intervention. This study is generally used to diagnose or rule out a disorder.
In this study, a CPAP machine or ‘continuous positive airway’ machine is utilized to provide mild form of air pressure to help individuals with breathing difficulties. This procedure is used in both adults and children to help keep their airways open and normalize the breathing.
This study combines two different studies in one to include the Diagnostic and CPAP Titration study. The study begins with the Diagnostic Evaluation study and at mid-point switches to the CPAP. Once the CPAP is started, breathing pressure is adjusted through the night until breathing has been normalized.

What are sleep studies?
Sleep studies are testing services that can diagnose sleep disorders like insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome. They also help identify the causes of snoring, daytime sleepiness, and persistent fatigue.
The Sleep Services of Maryland LLC providers offer in-home sleep studies that allow you to monitor your breathing patterns and heart rate while you sleep in the comfort of your own home. They also provide nocturnal polysomnograms (PSG) testing at the in-office sleep labs.
What are PSG sleep studies?
PSG sleep studies require that you spend the night in the sleep lab at one of the Sleep Services of Maryland LLC offices. While you sleep, a sleep specialist will monitor vital information about your health and your sleep habits.
Sleep Services of Maryland LLC uses three types of overnight sleep studies to learn more about your sleep quality. These include:
Diagnostic evaluation
During a diagnostic evaluation sleep study, a sleep specialist monitors your sleep without any intervention. This type of study helps to diagnose or rule out sleep disorders.
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) titration
During a CPAP titration study, you will wear a CPAP device that delivers continuous oxygen into your body through a mask you wear over your face.
This study can determine if supplemental oxygen effectively relieves breathing issues and other sleep apnea symptoms.
Split night study
A split night study combines both the diagnostic evaluation and CPAP titration studies to evaluate your breathing and sleep quality.
Your study begins with a diagnostic evaluation of your sleep and breathing habits, then switches to CPAP titration to determine how breathing improvements affect your sleep.
What happens during sleep studies?
At the sleep lab, you will lie comfortably in a private room. Your provider will attach sensors to your face, scalp, throat, chest, fingers, and legs. These sensors aren’t painful and will provide valuable information about your health and sleep quality.
You can bring your own pillow and other comforts to make it easier for you to fall asleep. While you sleep, the sleep specialists will monitor and record information about your:
- Breathing
- Snoring
- Airflow
- Heart rate
- Muscle tone
- Eye movements
- Leg movements
- Brainwave patterns
At the end of your study, your specialist will discuss your diagnosis and the available treatments to improve your sleep quality.
